How to Store Research Peptides: Lyophilized Powder, Temperature and Shelf Life

A research peptide that was 99% pure when it left the testing lab can be considerably less pure a few months later if it’s stored badly in your laboratory. Peptides are sensitive to heat, moisture, light, and repeated temperature swings. The good news is that correct storage is simple — it just has to be deliberate. Here is what to do, what to avoid, and why.
Why lyophilized peptides ship at room temperature but store cold
Most research peptides are supplied as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder. Lyophilization removes the water from the peptide under vacuum, which dramatically slows the chemical reactions — hydrolysis, oxidation, deamidation — that break peptides down. In this dry state a peptide is stable enough to survive a couple of days in transit at ambient temperature without meaningful degradation. Stability in transit is not the same as stability on a shelf for a year. Once the vial arrives, the goal is to hold it in the conditions that keep those reactions as slow as possible: cold, dark, dry, and undisturbed.
Storing the sealed, lyophilized vial
Temperature
For storage beyond a few weeks, -20°C (a standard laboratory or household freezer) is the accepted condition for lyophilized peptides. Well-sealed powder stored at -20°C typically remains within specification for a year or more; many peptides last considerably longer. For short-term storage of a few weeks, 2–8°C (refrigerator) is acceptable.
Avoid frost-free freezers where possible. They cycle their temperature to prevent ice build-up, and those repeated warm-cold cycles are exactly what you’re trying to avoid. If a frost-free freezer is what you have, store the vial inside a sealed container in the back, where temperature is most stable.
Moisture
Moisture is the enemy of a lyophilized peptide. Water restarts the hydrolysis that freeze-drying paused. Keep the vial’s stopper and crimp seal intact until you’re ready to use it, and store vials inside a sealed bag or container with a desiccant packet. Condensation is the most common way moisture gets in: a cold vial opened in warm room air will sweat. Always let a vial come to room temperature before opening it — typically 15 to 30 minutes on the bench.
Light
Some amino acid residues (tryptophan, tyrosine, methionine, cysteine) are light-sensitive and can oxidize. Keep vials in their box, in a drawer, or in an opaque container. A freezer is dark by default; a lab bench is not.

What changes once the peptide is in solution
Dissolving the lyophilized powder in a laboratory solvent or buffer for an in-vitro assay puts the water back. From that moment the clock runs faster. A peptide in solution should be stored at 2–8°C and used in your experiments within the window appropriate to that compound, which for most is days to a few weeks. Some are notably less stable in solution than others.
Two practices make the biggest difference:
- Aliquot. If you won’t use the whole vial promptly, divide it into single-experiment portions and freeze those. Each aliquot then goes through one thaw, not many.
- Don’t refreeze. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles cause aggregation and loss of integrity. Freezing a full vial of solution, thawing some out, and refreezing the rest is the single most common way a good research sample is ruined.
Dissolve gently. Let the solvent run down the inside wall of the vial rather than jetting it onto the powder, and swirl rather than shake. Foaming means mechanical stress on the peptide.
Common mistakes
Opening a cold vial. Condensation forms instantly. Let it warm to room temperature first.
Storing in a fridge door or a frost-free freezer drawer. Both cycle temperature constantly.
Leaving vials on the bench between uses. Room temperature and light, day after day, add up.
Refreezing a vial of solution. Aliquot instead.
Shaking to dissolve. Swirl. Foam is a sign of damage.
Ignoring the date. Label each vial with the date received and the date it was put into solution.
How long do research peptides last?
Sealed and lyophilized at -20°C, most research peptides remain within specification for 12 to 24 months, and many longer. At 2–8°C, plan on a few months. At room temperature, weeks at most. These are general figures — individual peptides vary, and the only way to know a specific vial’s condition is to test it, which is one reason we publish a Certificate of Analysis for every batch and record the date of analysis on it.
